At Xiamen University, Professor Deng Kongzhao of the Graduate Institute for Taiwan Studies is bringing history to life for a new generation. A fervent admirer of the 17th-century general Zheng Chenggong, also known in the West as Koxinga, Deng is captivated by the brilliant strategies employed to recover the island of Taiwan from Dutch colonial rule.
“Zheng Chenggong’s tactics were ahead of his time,” says Professor Deng. “His use of deception, particularly the ‘smoke bomb’ tactics, showcased not only military genius but also a deep understanding of psychological warfare.”
The story of Zheng Chenggong is a pivotal chapter in Taiwan’s history. In 1661, Zheng led a fleet to the island, aiming to expel the Dutch who had established a foothold. Using innovative strategies, including creating diversions with smoke to confuse and mislead enemy forces, he successfully recaptured the island.
Professor Deng believes that sharing these historical narratives is essential for understanding the complex tapestry of cross-strait relations. “By studying figures like Zheng Chenggong, we gain insights into the cultural and historical connections that continue to influence the region today,” he explains.
His lectures have resonated with students, many of whom are inspired by the tales of ingenuity and resilience. “History isn’t just about the past,” notes one student. “It’s about learning lessons that can guide our future.”
Through his passion for history, Professor Deng is not only educating but also inspiring a new generation to delve deeper into the stories that have shaped their world.
