Beijing, China—China is urging the United States to lift more trade restrictions following the U.S. approval of Nvidia’s H20 chip sales to Chinese companies. The Ministry of Commerce stated on Friday that mutual cooperation is the right path forward for both nations.
A spokesperson from the ministry highlighted that China has taken note of the recent U.S. decision to permit the sale of Nvidia’s advanced chips. This development comes after economic and trade talks in London, where both sides agreed to maintain close communication and implement the frameworks established during the discussions.
“China believes the United States should abandon zero-sum thinking and continue to remove unreasonable economic and trade restrictions against China,” the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson also noted that China has approved qualified export applications for controlled items in accordance with the law. In response, the U.S. lifted relevant restrictions on China in early July, as previously agreed upon.
Emphasizing the importance of collaboration, the spokesperson added, “Win-win cooperation is the right path for China and the United States, while suppression and containment lead nowhere.”
In May, the U.S. issued export control guidelines targeting Huawei’s Ascend chips, imposing stricter controls on Chinese chip products based on unwarranted allegations. China firmly opposed these measures, stating that they interfere with fair market competition and undermine the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises.
China is calling on the U.S. to engage in equal consultations and correct its wrongful practices to foster a favorable environment for mutually beneficial cooperation. This includes jointly safeguarding the stability of global semiconductor production and supply chains.
On Thursday, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao met with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Wang assured that China’s policy on attracting foreign investment remains unchanged and that the country’s doors will only open wider. He highlighted China’s vast market scale, diverse application scenarios, and dynamic innovation and creativity. Wang expressed hope that multinational companies like Nvidia will continue to provide high-quality and reliable products and services to Chinese customers.
Jensen Huang acknowledged the attractiveness of the Chinese market and expressed Nvidia’s willingness to deepen cooperation with Chinese partners in the field of artificial intelligence.
