China’s Cong Guang Appointed UN’s New Special Envoy to Horn of Africa

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Cong Guang of China as the new Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa. The announcement was made on Thursday by UN associate spokesperson Stephanie Tremblay during a daily briefing.

Cong succeeds Hanna Serwaa Tetteh of Ghana, with Guterres expressing gratitude for her leadership and dedicated service to the organization. Tremblay conveyed the Secretary-General’s appreciation for Tetteh’s contributions.

With over 23 years of experience in various UN peace operations, Cong brings a wealth of knowledge to his new role. Much of his career has been focused on the Horn of Africa region, which includes countries like Ethiopia, Somalia, and Sudan. His expertise is expected to be invaluable in addressing the complex challenges facing the region.

Prior to this appointment, Cong served as the Deputy Special Representative (Political) for South Sudan and Deputy Head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). His work in South Sudan involved efforts to support peace processes and political stability in the nation.

Before joining the United Nations in 2002, Cong had a distinguished career with China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His background includes extensive experience in diplomacy and international relations, which will aid him in his new position.

The Horn of Africa has faced numerous challenges, including conflicts, humanitarian crises, and political instability. As Special Envoy, Cong will be responsible for promoting peace, security, and development in the region.
