red Mansions themed Theatrical Complex Draws Millions of Visitors

Immersive ‘Dream of Red Mansions’ Complex Captivates Millions in Hebei

An innovative theatrical complex in Langfang, Hebei Province, is bringing the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions to life. The Unique Dream of Red Mansions offers visitors an immersive experience through cutting-edge technology and interactive performances.

Constructed over eight years, the complex features 108 scenic gardens and reinterprets the beloved stories through 21 immersive performances totaling more than 800 minutes. Since its opening in July 2023, it has welcomed over 2 million tourists and staged 21,000 plays, attracting nearly 11 million viewers.

The performances blend experience, technology, and art seamlessly. In the “You Huan Wu” Theater, 36 partition doors open to reveal a 39.3-meter-long water curtain enhanced by rain and fog effects. With 571 lights and 130-decibel surround sound, audiences are transported into the ethereal “Land of Illusion.” Another highlight, the “Bed Theater,” uses unique mirror film technology to transform beds into seats, allowing spectators to literally dream along with the performance.

Unlike traditional adaptations, the complex focuses not on the romantic tale of Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu but on the enduring connection between people and A Dream of Red Mansions over the past three centuries. The interactive nature of the performances turns visitors from mere onlookers into active participants in the storytelling.

Beyond the shows, visitors can savor thematic cuisine at venues like Granny Liu’s Baozi Shop and Jinling Noodle Restaurant. They can also engage in special activities such as costume experiences and interactions with characters from the narrative, enhancing the immersive atmosphere.
