The vast grasslands of north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region came alive on July 19 as the 35th Naadam Festival kicked off in Xilin Gol League. Marking a vibrant celebration of Mongolian nomadic culture, the festival attracts visitors from across the nation.
“Naadam,” meaning “entertainment and games” in Mongolian, showcases traditional sports such as horse racing, wrestling, and archery. The festivities also feature music, dance, and cultural exhibitions, offering a rich glimpse into the region’s heritage. Recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage item in 2006, the festival has grown into a major cultural and tourism event.
This year’s festival blends tradition with modern experiences. Attendees can explore 18 themed zones highlighting Mongolian sports, heritage crafts, and picturesque grassland settings ideal for photos. Family-friendly camping areas and all-day cultural performances provide immersive experiences for visitors of all ages. With free shuttle buses and the assistance of 300 volunteers, the festival ensures a smooth and engaging environment for everyone.
Tourists are greeted with complimentary “care kits” containing sun protection and travel guides to enhance their stay. To promote local cuisine, over 1 million yuan (approximately $139,000) in food vouchers are being distributed through popular social media platforms. Additionally, top scenic spots across Xilin Gol League are offering half-price admission from July 18 to 21, encouraging exploration of the region’s natural beauty.
The Naadam Festival not only preserves and promotes Mongolian traditions but also strengthens cultural exchange and tourism in Inner Mongolia. As the festival continues, the spirit of the grasslands shines brightly, inviting all to partake in its unique charm.
