Heavenly Horses Festival Gallops into Xinjiang’s Zhaosu County

Thrilling equestrian competitions, dynamic youth combat matches, and vibrant cultural performances are just some of the highlights of the 2025 Xinjiang Ili Heavenly Horses Culture and Tourism Festival, currently underway in Zhaosu County, Xinjiang.

The festival, which kicked off its opening ceremony on Saturday, runs from May to October, offering five months of exciting events. With a lineup of 16 diverse activities, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Known as “China’s Land of Heavenly Horses,” Zhaosu County boasts a rich tradition of horse breeding that spans thousands of years. The region is famous for the Ili horse, a breed admired for its powerful yet agile qualities.

First launched in 1992, the festival has become a signature cultural and tourism event in the county. It celebrates the heritage of horse culture while promoting ethnic traditions and boosting local tourism.

Beyond the equestrian spectacles, the festival also features in-depth academic seminars on the horse industry, providing insights into the future of equine affairs in the region. It’s a unique blend of tradition and modernity, offering a glimpse into the vibrant culture of Xinjiang.
