China’s Fujian Province Activates Flood Emergency as Typhoon Wipha Approaches

Southeast China’s Fujian Province has activated a Level-IV flood control emergency response as Typhoon Wipha moves closer. The alert was issued at 8 a.m. on Monday following heavy to torrential rainfall that has been affecting coastal areas since Sunday.

Typhoon Wipha, the sixth typhoon of the year, is bringing more than just strong winds. Weather authorities forecast that multiple areas in Fujian will experience heavy rainfall over the next three days, raising concerns about potential flooding and other hazards.

In response, authorities have called for heightened vigilance. Local governments and departments are required to promptly activate or adjust emergency response measures. They are enhancing monitoring systems, issuing early warnings, and conducting joint consultations for risk assessments.

Comprehensive prevention and response strategies are being implemented to tackle rainstorm disasters and secondary hazards. These include mountain floods, small and medium-sized river floods, geological hazards, and urban waterlogging.

Typhoon Wipha made its second landfall near Hailing Island in Yangjiang, Guangdong Province, at around 8:15 p.m. on Sunday as a strong tropical storm. The storm brought maximum wind speeds of 25 meters per second near its center, according to the provincial meteorological observatory.

China operates a four-tier emergency response system for flood control, with Level I being the most severe. The activation of a Level-IV response in Fujian signals the need for communities to stay alert and prepared.
