Chinese and EU Trade Officials Discuss Cooperation Amid Sanctions Tensions

Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao held a video meeting with European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maros Sefcovic on Tuesday. The meeting focused on strengthening China-EU economic and trade cooperation, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Commerce on Wednesday.

During the talks, both sides engaged in “candid and in-depth” discussions about key issues affecting their trade relationship. The dialogue comes at a crucial time as both China and the European Union seek to navigate complex global economic challenges.

Minister Wang expressed concerns over the EU’s recent decision to include two Chinese financial institutions in its latest round of sanctions against Russia. He lodged stern representations, emphasizing China’s position on the matter. The Ministry of Commerce highlighted that these actions could impact the mutual trust and cooperation between China and the EU.
