China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, has called for de-escalation amid rising tensions between Cambodia and Thailand. Speaking to a CMG reporter on Thursday, Fu emphasized China’s concern over the situation and urged both sides to exercise restraint.
“Cambodia and Thailand are not only our good neighbors but also friendly neighbors to each other,” Fu said. “As important members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), we hope that peace will prevail.”
Fu highlighted that China is maintaining communication with member states of the UN Security Council and relevant countries to facilitate dialogue. He expressed China’s hope that the situation can stabilize soon and that peace can be achieved through peaceful means, a tradition upheld by ASEAN nations.
“China is playing a mediating role in facilitating communication between the two sides,” the senior diplomat added. “We respect the meeting arrangements of the UN Security Council and are in contact with all member states and relevant parties.”
The UN Security Council is reportedly arranging an emergency meeting to address the situation between Cambodia and Thailand, reflecting international concern over the escalating tensions.
