An exhibition showcasing the splendor of China’s Tang Dynasty (7th-10th Century) has opened at the Guimet National Museum of Asian Arts in Paris, with Chinese President Xi Jinping and French President Emmanuel Macron each penning prefaces for the event.
Marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France, the “Tang China – A Cosmopolitan Dynasty” exhibition highlights the historical ties and mutual appreciation between the two nations. President Xi expressed his joy at the exhibition’s timely opening, a result of collaborative efforts by cultural experts from both countries following his visit to France in May.
“The Tang Dynasty stands as one of the most prosperous periods in Chinese history,” Xi noted. “Its dynamic economy, flourishing culture, intellectual inclusivity, and artistic achievements like poetry and painting continue to inspire admiration today.” He emphasized that the dynasty’s openness and confidence extended its cultural influence across Asia and into Europe via the ancient Silk Road.
President Xi voiced confidence that the exhibition will offer French and European audiences a vivid understanding of the Tang Dynasty’s brilliance and the unique charm of Chinese civilization. He called for deepening people-to-people exchanges and cultural heritage cooperation, integrating historical sentiments and contemporary spirits to strengthen the China-France comprehensive strategic partnership.
President Macron highlighted the significance of the Tang Dynasty in China’s history, praising its brilliant culture and creative vitality. He noted the dynasty’s active foreign exchanges through the Silk Road, which produced a stunning array of artistic treasures. “This historically significant exhibition underscores the dynamic cultural exchanges between France and China,” Macron said, “and will continue to play an important role in advancing our bilateral relations.”
The exhibition features over 200 exquisite artifacts from 32 cultural and museum institutions across 10 regions in China. Directed by China’s National Cultural Heritage Administration and the French Ministry of Culture, it offers a rare glimpse into the art and influence of a dynasty that shaped Chinese civilization and its connections with the world.
