Taiwan’s Lien Te-an Triumphs in Yajia at Ethnic Minority Games in Sanya
The 12th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities in Sanya, Hainan Province, witnessed an exhilarating display of strength and tradition as Taiwan’s athlete, Lien Te-an, clinched victory in the Yajia competition. Competing in the 85-kilogram weight class, Lien defeated his opponent from Heilongjiang Province, marking a significant achievement for Taiwan’s ethnic minority delegation.
Yajia, also known as the “elephant tug-of-war,” is a unique sport popular in China’s Xizang Autonomous Region (Tibet). Participants lie down back-to-back and pull against each other using a rope, mimicking the strength and grace of elephants. The sport originates from the Tibetan belief that the elephant is a sacred messenger from the divine, and emulating its actions is thought to bring good fortune.
Success in Yajia extends beyond brute strength; it requires endurance, strategic energy management, and refined technique. Lien’s triumph not only highlights his physical prowess but also his dedication to mastering this traditional sport.
The National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities celebrate the rich cultural heritage of China’s diverse ethnic groups. Events like Yajia foster unity and mutual understanding among participants, showcasing the nation’s commitment to preserving its traditional sports and customs.
