Once an ethnic sport played in northeast China, Pearl Ball is now captivating audiences nationwide at the 12th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities in Sanya, Hainan Province. This year, the sport has drawn over 500 participants across 36 men’s and women’s teams, marking its largest turnout yet.
Described as ‘mini-basketball with a moving hoop,’ Pearl Ball introduces a fresh twist on team sports. In this fast-paced game, players aim to score by throwing a soft, lightweight ball into a handheld net carried by a teammate who moves around the court. Each match lasts 30 minutes, featuring two teams of seven players each.
The unique rules and dynamic gameplay make Pearl Ball both physically demanding and entertaining. Its emphasis on teamwork and agility offers participants an excellent workout while minimizing the risk of injury.
Pearl Ball’s rise in popularity reflects a growing interest in traditional ethnic sports, bringing diverse cultures together and showcasing China’s rich heritage on the national stage.
