A new film titled “Promise of Decades” is set to hit Chinese theaters on December 14, bringing to life a heartfelt story that intertwines love and history. The movie follows a long-distance relationship between two lovers over two decades, beginning with Macao’s reunification with China in the late 1990s.
Laurinda Ho, making her film debut, portrays the character based in Macao, while actor Zi Sha plays her counterpart in Beijing. The film not only explores their personal journey but also highlights the transformation of Macao over the past 25 years since its return to Chinese sovereignty.
Directed by Macao native Tracy Choi, “Promise of Decades” showcases iconic local landmarks, beloved snack foods, and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, symbolizing the growing connections between Macao and mainland China. Choi believes the film plays a significant role in helping younger generations understand Macao’s history and cultural heritage.
“Audiences can feel the intense emotions of the Macao people, their inclusive nature, and optimistic spirit,” said Fu Ruoqing, the film’s producer and chair of the China Film Group. He expressed confidence that future film collaborations between the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, and Macao will continue to deepen.
During the premiere in Beijing, Laurinda Ho shared her excitement about filming in her hometown. “It was an immense honor to revisit Macao’s transformations through this film,” she said, expressing a profound sense of intimacy and familiarity.
