A new documentary titled “Hotline Beijing” has premiered in China’s capital, showcasing the innovative 12345 public service hotline that connects citizens directly with the government.
Launched ahead of the 2024 Beijing Forum on Swift Response to Public Complaints, the film delves into the everyday experiences of residents navigating life in a megacity of over 21 million people.
The premiere attracted over 400 attendees, including international city leaders, filmmakers, and experts. China Media Group President Shen Haixiong emphasized the significance of the 12345 hotline in his speech, highlighting Beijing’s commitment to a people-centered development philosophy.
“The 12345 hotline is a 24/7 service that addresses people’s concerns and reflects their sense of fulfillment and security,” Shen said. “It’s about putting people first and integrating their voices into governance.”
Featuring seven real-life stories, the documentary explores challenges faced by telephone operators, parking difficulties, and citizen feedback mechanisms. It offers a glimpse into how Beijing tackles common urban issues through agile, resilient, and smart governance.
Former Jordanian Prime Minister Omar Razzaz praised the system showcased in the film. “The online platform for citizen complaints empowers people to ask questions and make suggestions,” he noted. “I was truly amazed by the film.”
Set for release in 2025, “Hotline Beijing” aims to inspire other megacities worldwide by sharing Beijing’s experiences in enhancing public service and responsiveness.
