Chengdu, known worldwide as the home of pandas, is witnessing a revival of its traditional lacquerware art thanks to a young designer who’s blending ancient craftsmanship with modern flair.
Li Haoran, inspired by the beloved black-and-white bears at the local panda research base, is creating unique lacquerware pieces that resonate with both the old and the new. By incorporating panda motifs into his designs, Li bridges the gap between tradition and contemporary art.
“Pandas symbolize peace and harmony,” Li says. “I wanted to bring that spirit into my work and make traditional lacquerware appealing to younger generations.”
The centuries-old art of Chengdu lacquerware, once at risk of fading away, is now experiencing a resurgence. Li’s innovative approach not only preserves this cultural heritage but also infuses it with fresh energy, capturing the imagination of audiences both in China and around the world.
As trends evolve, artists like Li are showing that tradition can adapt and thrive in modern times, ensuring that Chengdu’s artistic legacy continues to shine.
