Turkish Ambassador Shares Türkiye’s Tea Tradition on Macao’s Anniversary

Beijing, China — In celebration of the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to China, Dr. İsmail Hakkı Musa, the Turkish Ambassador to China, shed light on the rich tea culture of Türkiye. Speaking on CGTN’s special program “UniTea: Macao Tea Melody”, Ambassador Musa emphasized that tea, or Çay as it is known in Turkish, is more than just a drink in Türkiye—it’s a way of life.

“Drinking tea in tulip-shaped glasses is a deeply rooted tradition that symbolizes friendship, hospitality, and courtesy,” Ambassador Musa explained. He highlighted how this simple act brings people together, fostering connections and sharing warmth in Turkish society.

The ambassador extended his heartfelt wishes for the success of the special program, noting the importance of cultural exchanges in strengthening ties between nations. “I hope this program brings our cultures closer and allows us to appreciate the beauty in our traditions,” he said.

The UniTea program aims to celebrate the diverse tea cultures across the world, bringing stories and traditions to a global audience. As Macao marks a significant milestone, the inclusion of Türkiye’s tea heritage underscores the universal language of tea as a symbol of unity and cultural richness.

For many young people in Türkiye and beyond, tea remains a staple of daily life, a tradition passed down through generations, and a representation of national identity. Ambassador Musa’s insights offer a glimpse into this cherished practice, inviting others to experience the warmth and hospitality that a simple cup of tea can convey.
