As Macao marks the 25th anniversary of its return to China, one musician is using her art to celebrate unity and culture. Peggy Chan, a gifted guzheng player and graduate student at Beijing’s Central Conservatory of Music, has spent the past seven years perfecting her craft far from her hometown.
“The guzheng is more than just an instrument to me; it’s a bridge connecting the rich heritage of Macao with the vast traditions of the Chinese mainland,” Chan shared in a recent interview.
Chan’s journey began in Macao, where her early passion for music set her on a path to one of China’s most prestigious music schools. In Beijing, she immersed herself in the world of the guzheng, a traditional Chinese string instrument known for its haunting melodies.
Over the years, Chan has performed at numerous cultural events, showcasing how music can transcend boundaries. “Every note I play is a tribute to my roots in Macao and the shared history we commemorate this year,” she said.
Her performances blend the distinctive influences of Macao’s unique culture with classical Chinese musical traditions. “I hope to inspire young people to embrace their heritage while exploring new horizons,” Chan added.
As festivities unfold to celebrate this significant anniversary, Chan’s music echoes the sentiment of unity and a shared future. Through her dedication, she stands as a testament to how art can play a pivotal role in bringing people together.
