China’s Media Industry Boosts Global Ties Through International Exchange

China’s news media industry is making significant strides in connecting with the world, according to a new report released this week. The report, titled “Development of China’s News Media (2024)”, was compiled by the All-China Journalists Association (ACJA) and highlights how Chinese media is fostering international collaboration.

From hosting international forums to organizing exchange programs, Chinese media organizations are actively promoting dialogue among journalists worldwide. Events like the Belt and Road Journalists Forum, the China-Central and Eastern European Countries Journalists Roundtable, and the China-Mongolia Media Forum have brought together media professionals to share insights and strengthen ties.

The ACJA has welcomed numerous foreign press delegations to China, offering them a firsthand look at the country’s media landscape, while also sending Chinese journalists abroad to experience global perspectives.

In August 2024, the People’s Daily, one of China’s leading newspapers, hosted the Media Cooperation Forum on Belt and Road. This event led to the release of the Chengdu Initiative on Media Cooperation, aiming to enhance media partnerships along the Belt and Road regions, promoting cultural understanding and shared growth.

Meanwhile, Xinhua News Agency, China’s official state-run press agency, has been expanding its global network. In 2023 alone, Xinhua signed cooperation agreements with 33 major media and government agencies across 25 countries, strengthening news exchange and collaboration. With a total of 173 contracts covering 124 countries and regions, Xinhua is enhancing its global presence.

Significant events like the World Media Summit, the BRICS Media Forum, and the China-Central Asia News Agency Forum, organized by Xinhua, have provided platforms for media leaders to discuss pressing issues and explore ways to work together.

China Media Group (CMG), another key player in China’s media landscape, has also been active on the international stage. In 2022 and 2023, CMG hosted the Journey Through Civilizations World Tour and “Chinese Modernization and the World” media events, promoting cultural exchange and showcasing China’s developments to the world.

These efforts reflect China’s commitment to fostering global media cooperation, encouraging the sharing of stories, cultures, and ideas across borders. For young audiences in the Global South, these initiatives open up new avenues for understanding China and engaging with global narratives.
