Over 2.7 Billion Trips Expected During China’s Spring Festival Travel Rush

The Spring Festival travel rush, known as chunyun, is underway in China, with transportation authorities expecting over 2.7 billion inter-regional trips to be made this year. On the 11th day of the travel period, more than 270 million trips are anticipated, marking one of the peak travel days as people journey home for family reunions during the Lunar New Year.

According to data released by transportation authorities, an estimated 14.2 million passenger trips will be made by rail, 255 million by highway, 680,000 by waterway, and 2.39 million by air. The numbers reflect a significant increase compared to the previous year, highlighting the resurgence of travel after pandemic-related restrictions have eased.

The Spring Festival travel period lasts for 40 days, typically starting 15 days before the Lunar New Year and ending 25 days after. This year’s chunyun runs from January 14 to February 22, accommodating the massive movement of people across the country.

In December, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) inscribed the Spring Festival on its intangible cultural heritage list, recognizing its importance and influence on Chinese culture and traditions.

The annual travel rush is not only a testament to China’s vast transportation network but also a reflection of the enduring importance of family and tradition in Chinese society. Young people are particularly excited this year, as many will be reuniting with family members they haven’t seen in years due to previous travel limitations.

“I can’t wait to see my grandparents and celebrate the New Year together,” said Li Ming, a university student in Beijing. “The journey might be long, but it’s worth it.”
