Geneva Celebrates Chinese Language Day with CMG’s Inspiring Video Festival

Geneva was abuzz with cultural exchange as over 300 guests from 50 countries gathered at the Palais des Nations for the 2025 United Nations Chinese Language Day and the 5th CMG Chinese Language Video Festival on April 15.

Co-hosted by China Media Group (CMG), international organizations, and the UN Office at Geneva, the event served as a vibrant prelude to the annual UN Chinese Language Day observed on April 20.

This year’s theme, “A Journey to China,” invited international friends to share their perspectives on China’s rich culture and dynamic society. CMG President Shen Haixiong, speaking via video address, highlighted China’s growing vitality and its significant role in global prosperity. He emphasized the importance of cultural exchanges in building a shared future and encouraged guests to explore the opportunities that China offers.

Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, praised the Chinese language as a vital bridge for intercultural dialogue. She noted its influence as one of the world’s oldest languages, fostering connections among diverse cultures. Chen Xu, China’s ambassador to the United Nations Office at Geneva, underscored the UN’s commitment to cultural diversity and mutual understanding, as exemplified by the annual celebration.

Attendees were treated to a screening of CMG’s AI-translated micro-documentary “On the Trail of the Chinese Dragon,” which offered unique insights into China’s heritage. Additionally, a promotional video from the “China Travel with Chinese Films” campaign showcased the country’s stunning landscapes and vibrant cities. Exhibitions highlighted various aspects of Chinese culture, from traditional arts to modern innovations.

Previous winners of the video festival took the stage to share their personal travel stories and cultural experiences in China, inspiring many in the audience. The festival continues to welcome new voices, with video submissions open until the end of May and results to be announced in June.

The event not only celebrated the beauty of the Chinese language but also fostered a deeper understanding between people from around the world, building bridges through shared stories and experiences.
