Latin American Journalists Explore Living Legacy of Luoyangs Peonies

Latin American Journalists Discover China’s Peony Heritage in Luoyang

A group of 27 journalists from Latin America and the Caribbean embarked on an enchanting journey through the Luoyang National Peony Garden in central China’s Henan Province on April 21. Representing countries like Brazil, Cuba, Argentina, Peru, Mexico, Jamaica, Barbados, and Grenada, these reporters delved into the heart of China’s rich cultural heritage as part of the “Journey to Chinese Civilization: Henan” tour.

Known as the “Queen of Flowers,” the peony holds a cherished place in Chinese culture, symbolizing prosperity and national pride for over a thousand years. Established in 1984, the Luoyang National Peony Garden is a premier destination for peony cultivation and research. The garden boasts hundreds of thousands of peony plants and over 1,300 varieties, including rare species from Japan, the United States, Europe, and unique hybrids.

During the spring, the garden transforms into a vibrant tapestry of colors, with blooming peonies set against traditional Chinese pavilions and flowing streams. Recent advancements in horticulture have expanded the varieties and extended the blooming season into mid-May, offering visitors an extended opportunity to experience the floral spectacle.

The journalists’ visit not only provided an up-close look at China’s botanical treasures but also fostered a deeper cultural understanding. By immersing themselves in the beauty and tradition of the peonies, they bridged continents and connected with the shared appreciation of nature’s wonders.
