By day, Xu Mengran is immersed in the structured world of computer science textbook editing. By night, she transforms into a passionate Peking Opera performer, gracefully balancing the worlds of logic and art.
Starting her journey at the tender age of six, Xu has mastered the intricate blend of singing, speaking, acting, and movement that defines Peking Opera. For her, the rhythm and structure of this traditional art form mirror the precision required in her editorial work.
In 2024, Xu participated in the inaugural Peking Opera Fans Conference hosted by China Media Group. The event gathered enthusiasts and professionals from various backgrounds, united by their love for Peking Opera. Under the mentorship of renowned artist Zhang Ping, Xu had the opportunity to perform alongside some of the most respected figures in the field—an experience she describes as both humbling and exhilarating.
Despite her demanding career in publishing, Xu’s commitment to Peking Opera remains unwavering. Every Saturday, she joins a Peking Opera club where members from diverse professions, including public servants and teachers, rehearse together.
“Peking Opera is both a way to relax and nourishment for the soul,” Xu shares. She believes that the art form is a powerful expression of modern ideals. “The female lead characters in works like The Riverside Pavilion and Matchmaker for the Successful Candidate represent qualities of today’s women—independent and in control of their own destiny,” she reflects.
For Xu, Peking Opera is more than just a hobby; it’s a source of personal growth and a bridge between tradition and modernity. Her story is a testament to how the pursuit of art can enrich one’s life, even amidst the demands of a logical and structured profession.
