Unearthing the Past: A Golden Connection to China’s Only Female Emperor
A remarkable discovery at the foot of Mount Songshan in Henan Province has shed new light on Wu Zetian, the only woman to rule as emperor in Chinese history. A gold strip, hidden for over a millennium, offers a glimpse into the life and beliefs of this extraordinary figure from the Tang Dynasty (618-907).
The gold strip, now housed at the Henan Museum, was unearthed in 1982, concealed within a rocky crevice. Measuring 36.2 centimeters in length and 8 centimeters in width, and weighing 223.5 grams, the strip is crafted from 90 percent pure gold. Its most captivating feature is a 63-character inscription dated July 7, 700 AD, revealing Empress Wu Zetian’s devotion to Taoism and her quest for longevity.
According to the inscription, Wu Zetian sent an envoy to Mount Songshan to offer the strip to Taoist deities, seeking healing and protection. This act reflects the ancient practice where emperors cast “jian”—metal strips serving as formal tokens conveying personal intentions—during sacred rituals. While jian made of bronze, silver, and jade have been found before, this is the first known example made of gold, highlighting its rarity and significance.
