The animated short film ‘Son’, directed by Zhanna Bekmambetova, is set to make its world premiere at the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival’s Golden Goblet Awards. The film centers on a father and his physically disabled son, Anvar, who rely solely on each other while living in a cottage on the edge of the grasslands.
Anvar cannot walk and struggles with even the simplest tasks, like lifting a spoon. As his father teeters on the brink of despair, televised images of a Mars rover ignite a spark of hope and wonder in their lives. The humble spoon becomes a symbol of overcoming life’s challenges, blending their dreams of cosmic exploration with deep familial bonds.
This marks another highlight for Bekmambetova at the Shanghai International Film Festival. Her previous work, ‘Tweet-Tweet’, garnered the Best Animated Short Film award at the festival’s 21st edition in 2018. With ‘Son’, she continues to captivate audiences with her evocative storytelling and animation, delving into themes that resonate universally.
