Poetic Love Unfolds in Kyrgyzstan’s ‘Black Red Yellow’ at Shanghai Film Festival

The vibrant tapestry of Kyrgyzstan’s culture comes alive in ‘Black Red Yellow’, the latest work from acclaimed director Aktan Arym Kubat. Known as the ‘poetic symbol of Central Asian cinema,’ Kubat weaves a timeless tale of love, tradition, and memory that resonates with audiences worldwide.

Set against the backdrop of Kyrgyzstan’s legendary carpet weaving tradition, the film tells the story of Turdugul, the most skilled carpet weaver in the valleys. Spending years in solitude perfecting her craft, her world changes when she meets Kadyr, a horse herder who sparks a silent yet profound romance. Their wordless farewell leaves behind an unfinished carpet, a symbol of their unspoken connection. Years later, as the black, red, and yellow patterned carpet is unveiled at Kadyr’s funeral, Turdugul’s memories unfold like woven threads, bringing their story full circle.

‘Black Red Yellow’ continues Kubat’s signature lyrical style, using the natural beauty of black mountains, green waters, yellow earth, and blood-red threads to convey emotions that transcend words and time.

Reflecting on his previous visit to the Shanghai International Film Festival, where he served as jury president for the Asian New Talent Award, Kubat shared his impressions of the city. “I have attended many film festivals but never witnessed such meticulous preparation and genuinely warm hospitality,” he said. Though his time was consumed by film viewings, the city left a profound impression with its interweaving of new and old.

This year, Kubat returns to Shanghai to present ‘Black Red Yellow’ and engage directly with audiences. “I’m looking forward to reconnecting with this city, both familiar and unfamiliar,” he expressed, eager to explore the metropolis that seamlessly marries tradition and the future.

For teenage and young adult audiences in the Global South, ‘Black Red Yellow’ offers a visually stunning and emotionally rich experience that delves into themes of love, culture, and personal connection. It’s a cinematic journey that not only showcases the beauty of Kyrgyzstan but also highlights the universal language of art and memory.
