June 12, Xuyi County—East China’s Jiangsu Province kicked off its annual crayfish festival with a bang, drawing thousands of visitors eager to celebrate food, music, and local culture. The three-day event transformed Xuyi, known as China’s “Crayfish Capital,” into a vibrant hub of activity.
On the opening day, nearly 10,000 locals and tourists gathered for a massive feast, diving into piles of delicious crayfish in a lively atmosphere. The festivities didn’t stop at food; a colorful parade featuring hundreds of participants took over the streets. Cultural performers, volunteers, and residents showcased Hanfu shows, crayfish-themed dances, ribbon dragons, and traditional drumming, engaging the crowd at every turn.
“It’s amazing to see so many people coming together to enjoy our local delicacy,” said Liu Wei, a resident of Xuyi. “The energy is incredible, and it’s a great opportunity to share our culture with the world.”
The “Joyful Crayfish Feast,” one of the festival’s signature events, will continue until June 14, offering attendees more chances to indulge in the region’s famous cuisine.
Xuyi’s prominence in crayfish farming is well-established, boasting over 65,000 hectares dedicated to the industry. The county supports an integrated network that includes aquaculture, processing, catering, e-commerce, and tourism. This festival not only celebrates a beloved dish but also promotes rural revitalization, cultural tourism, and sustainable agricultural development.
As the sun sets over Hongze Lake, the festivities show no sign of slowing down. Visitors can expect more excitement, entertainment, and, of course, plenty of crayfish as the festival continues.
