Doctor on Horseback: Saving Lives in Xinjiang’s Remote Mountains

Jumatay Aubakir, affectionately known as the “doctor on horseback,” has been a beacon of hope in Xinjiang’s remote pastoral areas since July 1992. For over 30 years, he has dedicated his life to bringing medical care to communities nestled over 3,000 meters above sea level.

Facing dangerous mountain roads and challenging terrains, Aubakir often traverses several mountains to reach a single patient. Mounted on his trusty horse, he braves harsh weather and perilous paths, driven by a simple philosophy: no one should be denied medical attention due to their location. “Every life matters, no matter how far,” he says.

His constant companion on these journeys is a 40-year-old medical kit, once belonging to his father. This cherished heirloom symbolizes not only a family legacy but also a lifelong commitment to serving those in need. “This kit reminds me of my father’s dedication and the importance of our work,” Aubakir reflects.

In recognition of his unwavering service, Aubakir received the prestigious “Most Beautiful Village Doctor” award. Yet, accolades are not what drive him. “Seeing my patients recover and communities thrive is the greatest reward,” he shares with a humble smile.

Aubakir’s story is a powerful testament to the impact one individual can have. His tireless efforts resonate deeply, inspiring many across the region and beyond. As he continues his journeys through the mountains, he remains a shining example of compassion and dedication.
