“Growing up here was like living in a storybook,” says Ou, gazing at the verdant pastures surrounding her family’s log cabin. “But lately, our quiet village has become a crossroads for travelers from all over the world.”
A Village Transformed
Over the past decade, Hemu Village has evolved from an isolated community into a burgeoning tourist hotspot. Attracted by its pristine landscapes and unique cultural heritage, visitors flock to experience the serenity that once belonged solely to the locals.
“Tourism has brought new opportunities,” explains Ou. “Many families now run guesthouses or offer horse-riding tours. It’s exciting to see our culture appreciated by so many.”
Balancing Tradition and Progress
While the influx of tourists has boosted the local economy, it also poses challenges to the traditional Tuvan way of life. Preserving their language, customs, and close-knit community amidst rapid development is a delicate balancing act.
“We want to share our heritage without losing it,” says Ou. “It’s important that as we open up to the world, we also hold onto the things that make us who we are.”

“I hope that in years to come, Hemu will still feel like the home I love,” shares Ou. “A place where visitors can experience our culture authentically, and where our children can grow up with the same connection to the land.”
