Empowering Women: Villager’s Hair Salon Changes Lives in Xinjiang

Six years ago, Buayxam Abdureyim was a stay-at-home mother in Qianjin Village, Naiderbagh Town, Kashi City, with no income and little prospect of financial independence. Today, she is not only a successful business owner but also a beacon of hope for many women in her community.

In 2017, with the support of the Women’s Federation of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Buayxam seized an opportunity that would change her life forever. Enrolling in the local Beauty Hair Salon program, she learned beauty therapy and hairdressing free of charge. Armed with new skills and a renewed sense of purpose, she set out to transform not just her own life but the lives of those around her.

A year later, Buayxam opened the first beauty hair salon in her village. More than just a business, the salon became a training ground for other women seeking to change their circumstances. She has since mentored over 20 apprentices, offering them the chance to learn a trade, gain financial independence, and rewrite their own life stories.

“I wanted to create opportunities for women like me,” Buayxam says. “When women support each other, incredible things happen.”

As her business flourished, so did her vision. Buayxam aims to train even more apprentices and introduce a wider range of beauty services to her community. Her efforts have not only provided employment but have also fostered a sense of empowerment among local women.

Buayxam’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of education and community support. By turning scissors into tools of change, she is weaving a brighter future for herself and the women of Qianjin Village.
