Niu Ruixue has always felt a special bond with Beijing. Driven by her affection for the city, she and her dedicated team established “Courtyard No. 27,” an activity center devoted to enriching the lives of senior citizens. Recently, they’ve launched an inspiring project called “Myriad of Lights,” aiming to recreate the historic Lantern Festival on Dengshikou Street just as it was over 300 years ago.
The Lantern Festival, celebrated on the 15th day of the first month in the lunar calendar, is a cherished tradition in Chinese culture, symbolizing unity and the arrival of spring. By reviving this ancient festival, Niu hopes to bring joy and a sense of nostalgia to the elderly community, while also reconnecting the younger generation with their rich cultural heritage.
“We want to light up not just the streets, but the hearts of our elders,” says Niu. “Through recreating the Lantern Festival, we hope to bridge the gap between past and present, young and old.”
The “Myriad of Lights” project is more than just a festival; it’s a celebration of Beijing’s history and a tribute to its enduring spirit. As lanterns illuminate Dengshikou Street once again, they symbolize hope, community, and the timeless beauty of shared traditions.
