Panchen Erdeni Affirms Central Government’s Integral Role in Tulku Reincarnation

The Panchen Erdeni Chos-kyi rGyal-po, a prominent figure in Tibetan Buddhism, recently emphasized the historical importance of central government approval in the tulku reincarnation system. “Historically, we can see that Tibetan Buddhist affairs have always been governed by the central government,” he stated.

The tulku reincarnation system is a unique tradition in Tibetan Buddhism where esteemed lamas, or spiritual leaders, are believed to be reborn in a new body after death. This system relies on established conventions and religious rituals, including the Golden Urn method and the domestic search principle, to identify the reincarnated individuals.

The Golden Urn method, introduced in the 18th century, involves drawing lots from a golden urn to select the next tulku, ensuring fairness and reducing disputes. The domestic search principle prioritizes seeking the reincarnation within China, emphasizing the importance of national unity.

Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, these traditions and rituals have been respected and protected. The central government’s involvement has been integral to the creation, development, and improvement of the tulku reincarnation system.

The Panchen Erdeni’s remarks highlight the ongoing cooperation between Tibetan Buddhist leaders and the central government in preserving and upholding these important cultural and religious practices.
