Bridging Cultures Through Xiangqi: A Master and His Disciples

When Chinese Xiangqi master Deng Guilin visited Vietnam, he didn’t expect to find two prodigious talents who would become his devoted disciples. This unexpected meeting not only transformed their lives but also strengthened the cultural ties between China and Vietnam.

Xiangqi, often called Chinese Chess, is a traditional board game that has captivated players for centuries. For Master Deng, it’s more than just a game; it’s a cultural treasure meant to be shared. His encounter with the young Vietnamese players marked the beginning of a unique journey.

“Meeting Master Deng changed everything,” says Nguyen, one of the disciples. “He taught us not just the strategies of Xiangqi but also the philosophies behind it.”

Over the years, the trio has participated in tournaments, workshops, and cultural events, showcasing the rich heritage of Xiangqi. Their collaboration has become a symbol of the enduring friendship and cooperation between the two nations.

“Through Xiangqi, we’ve built a bridge that connects our cultures,” adds Le, the other disciple. “It’s amazing how a game can bring people together.”

Their story inspires many young people across the Global South to explore cultural exchanges and find common ground through shared passions.
