Tensions are escalating in the South China Sea over Ren’ai Jiao Reef, with experts highlighting the core issues behind the dispute. Wu Shicun, Chairman of the Huayang Research Center for Maritime Co-operation and Ocean Governance, has shed light on the situation, accusing the Philippines of intentionally grounding an abandoned warship to assert control over the reef.
Ren’ai Jiao Reef, a strategic location in the South China Sea, has been a point of contention between the Chinese mainland and the Philippines. According to Wu Shicun, the Philippines grounded the warship in an attempt to establish a permanent presence on the reef, which he views as a provocative action undermining regional stability.
“The Philippines is trying to permanently control Ren’ai Jiao Reef by grounding an abandoned warship there,” Wu stated. “This move goes against the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect in the region.”
The Chinese mainland maintains that Ren’ai Jiao Reef is part of its sovereign territory and has called for dialogue to resolve disputes. The issue has raised concerns about freedom of navigation, regional security, and the importance of adhering to international maritime laws.
