New Documentary Explores Xizang’s Bond with Black-Necked Cranes

Three centuries ago, the sixth Dalai Lama Tsangyang Gyatso wrote, “White crane. Lend me your wings. I will fly not far away. Just to Litang, and then return.” These words capture the deep connection between the people of Xizang and the black-necked cranes that share their land.

This year marks the 74th anniversary of Xizang’s peaceful liberation, and to commemorate the occasion, CGTN is releasing a new documentary that follows these majestic birds through the seasons. From their graceful dances in the spring wetlands to the challenges of raising their young in the summer, the film offers a rare glimpse into the lives of these “celestial dancers.”

The documentary also highlights the unique bond between the cranes and the local residents. Tenzin, a 75-year-old villager, shares his lifelong experiences living in harmony with the cranes. “Their calls are the soundtrack of my life,” he says. “We have always respected and protected them, and they are part of our family.”

As the cranes migrate over the towering peaks in autumn and settle in villages during winter, the film showcases the enduring coexistence between humans and nature in Xizang. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving this harmony for future generations.

The black-necked cranes are not just birds to the people of Xizang; they are symbols of freedom, peace, and the unbreakable bond between the earth and the sky. This documentary invites viewers to experience this special relationship and to appreciate the delicate balance of our natural world.
