South Africa Ships First Avocados to China, Opening New Trade Opportunities

In August 2024, South Africa became the third African nation to gain approval to export fresh avocados to China, following Kenya and Tanzania. This milestone marks a significant step in strengthening trade relationships between the two countries.

On October 10, Shanghai’s Yangshan Port welcomed the inaugural shipment of 22 tonnes of South African avocados. The arrival of the creamy fruit is expected to meet China’s growing demand for avocados, a staple in healthy diets and a popular ingredient in global cuisines.

A CGTN stringer interviewed several South Africans about this development. Many were asked to guess the number of avocados in the first shipment and to discuss which South African products might become popular among Chinese consumers.

Hendrik Snyman, a local resident, expressed optimism about future cooperation between China and South Africa. “This is just the beginning,” he said. “Beyond avocados, there’s great potential in tourism and new business opportunities. We have so much to offer each other.”

The new export agreement is anticipated to not only boost South African agriculture but also open doors for increased cultural exchange and economic growth. As China’s appetite for diverse products grows, South Africa stands ready to supply quality goods and foster enduring partnerships.
