Chilean Student’s Journey: Bridging Cultures in China’s Heartland
In the bustling city of Chongqing, amid the rich tapestry of Chinese culture, Chilean student Raquel Herrera is living her dream. Pursuing a master’s degree in business administration at Chongqing University, Raquel’s journey is a testament to the power of cultural exchange and youthful ambition.
“I’ve always been fascinated by China’s history and culture,” Raquel shares with a warm smile. “Studying Chinese in Chile sparked a curiosity that I knew I had to explore firsthand.”
For three years, Raquel immersed herself in the Chinese language at a Confucius Institute in Chile, dedicating hours to mastering the nuances of Mandarin. Her hard work paid off when she was awarded a Chinese government scholarship in 2022, opening the door to study in China.
“Receiving the scholarship was life-changing,” she recalls. “It was an opportunity to not only advance my education but also to experience a culture so different yet so enriching.”
Beyond her academic pursuits, Raquel harbors a passion for the entertainment industry. She dreams of working within China’s vibrant entertainment sector to promote cultural exchanges between China and Chile.
“Art and media have a unique way of connecting people,” Raquel explains. “I hope to create projects that showcase the beauty of both our cultures and bring our peoples closer together.”
Looking ahead, Raquel is enthusiastic about the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in Peru. She hopes the conference will shine a spotlight on environmental issues and further enhance cultural exchanges among member countries.
“Global challenges require global solutions,” she says thoughtfully. “APEC provides a platform for us to collaborate and make a positive impact on important issues like the environment.”
Raquel’s journey underscores the transformative power of education and cultural curiosity. Her story inspires other young people in the Global South to seek opportunities beyond their borders, fostering understanding and collaboration in an increasingly interconnected world.
