For New York-based filmmaker Soraya Arrabal, a simple work assignment sparked a profound love for Chinese culture that has spanned over 13 years.
“I naturally fell in love with China after being exposed to the culture at work,” Soraya shares. Collaborating closely with Chinese colleagues opened her eyes to the richness of China’s traditions.
Her journey led her to Wuhan, in central China’s Hubei Province, where she experienced firsthand the depth of Chinese heritage. “The culture is incredibly rich, whether it’s the food or the regional differences,” she explains.
As a filmmaker, Soraya draws inspiration from renowned Chinese director Wong Kar-wai. “He is the director I admire most,” she says. “His shooting techniques and narration style offer a beautiful interpretation of China.”
Beyond the visuals and storytelling, Soraya feels a deep connection to the romance embedded within Chinese culture. “There’s a richness and romance that is truly captivating,” she notes.
Soraya’s story is a testament to the power of cultural exchange and the ways in which art can bridge worlds.
