Peruvian Scholar Bridges Cultures with Chinese Classics

Peruvian sinologist Joseph Cruz Soriano has been bridging cultures by sharing his passion for Chinese classics with his homeland. From a young age, Joseph was captivated by the Chinese language and culture, diving deep into martial arts, lion dance, calligraphy, and the profound teachings of the Confucian classics.

For years, he dedicated himself to studying the “I Ching,” also known as the “Book of Changes,” one of the oldest Chinese texts on philosophy and wisdom. His dedication paid off when he successfully translated this ancient work into Spanish, making it accessible to the Spanish-speaking world.

“I see so many similarities between Peru and China,” Joseph shared. “Our cultures value family, respect, and tradition. It’s amazing to see how connected we are, even being oceans apart.”

Joseph is thrilled to witness more young Peruvians embracing Chinese culture. With the growing popularity of Confucius Institutes in Peru, students now have more opportunities to learn the Chinese language and traditions. He believes these exchanges will deepen the friendship and understanding between Peru and China.

“Seeing young people eager to learn about China fills me with hope,” he said. “They are the bridge to a future of even stronger ties between our countries.”
