Rio de Janeiro—As the 2024 G20 Summit concluded in Brazil with the theme “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” voices from around the globe echoed the call for sustainable development. Among them is Raquel Herrera, a Chilean international student pursuing her master’s in business administration at Chongqing University in China.
Living in China, Raquel has witnessed firsthand the nation’s rapid advancements in wind energy. “From snowy plateaus to coastal cities, China has built massive wind turbines and achieved significant breakthroughs,” she shares. The impressive developments have inspired her to envision a stronger partnership between China and Chile in the field of wind energy.
“Chile has immense potential for wind energy, especially in our southern regions,” Raquel explains. “By collaborating with China, we can leverage their technology and experience to improve our wind turbines and contribute to global sustainability efforts.”
Raquel believes that youth have a crucial role to play in this endeavor. “Our generation must bring forward innovative ideas for environmental protection,” she says. “We need to discuss how to reduce pollution through technology and work together across borders.”
Her sentiments reflect a growing desire among young people in the Global South to take active roles in shaping a sustainable future. As the world becomes more interconnected, Raquel hopes that international cooperation will lead to shared solutions for common challenges.
“Sustainable development isn’t just a goal; it’s a responsibility we all share,” she adds. “By uniting our efforts, we can make a real difference.”
