Taiwan’s Vice President Lai Ching-te recently concluded a trip to the Pacific, visiting diplomatic allies and making a transit stopover in Hawaii. During his stopover, he met with former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Lai’s journey has sparked varied reactions among residents in Taiwan.
CGTN’s stringer spoke with locals to gauge their thoughts on Lai’s visit and the current state of cross-Strait relations.
“Him going out is just like putting on a show,” said Mr. Lin, a resident of Taiwan. “He doesn’t understand the suffering of the people. He only cares about his own interests.”
Another resident expressed a desire for improved communications between Taiwan and mainland China. “I think it is better to communicate with each other in a friendly manner,” they said.
Lai’s trip comes at a time of heightened tensions across the Taiwan Strait, with many hoping for peaceful and constructive dialogue between both sides.
