As the sun sets over the war-torn streets of Gaza, English teacher Maram Al-Zaanin gazes out her window, hoping for an end to the conflict that has gripped her homeland. “All we want is peace,” she says softly. “We dream of a future where our children can grow up without fear.”
The Palestine-Israel conflict continued throughout 2024, plunging the Gaza Strip into an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. According to local reports, over 45,000 Palestinians have lost their lives, and more than 106,000 have been injured in the ongoing violence.
As 2025 approaches, the people of Gaza face immense hardships, with shortages of essential supplies and continuous threats to their safety. Despite this, many like Maram hold onto hope. “Our resilience is our strength,” she says. “We believe that one day, peace will prevail.”
Young people across the region share similar sentiments, yearning for stability and opportunities to build their futures. “We want to study, to work, to live normal lives,” says a university student who wished to remain anonymous. “We are tired of the conflict.”
The international community continues to call for a resolution, but on the ground, everyday life remains a struggle. Maram remains determined. “I tell my students that despite everything, education is our weapon against despair,” she explains. “Knowledge empowers us to envision and create a better tomorrow.”
As the new year dawns, the people of Gaza send a message of hope to the world, praying that their wishes for peace will finally come true.
