U.S. professor Timothy Burns from Baylor University recently embarked on a journey to Henan Province in central China. Known as the cradle of Chinese civilization, Henan left a profound impression on Burns with its rich historical heritage and rapid modernization.
Henan, which means “south of the river,” lies south of China’s Yellow River and has served as the political, economic, and cultural center of the country for over 3,000 years. Hosting more than 20 dynasties and being the birthplace of China’s four great ancient inventions, the province captivated Burns with its deep-rooted history.
However, it was not only the past that caught his attention. During his visit, Burns witnessed firsthand China’s strides in modern technology and new energy development. He was particularly amazed by the quiet efficiency of electric bikes and the orderly designated lanes for riders. “Compared to motorcycles in the U.S., these electric bikes are so quiet and efficient,” Burns remarked.
Impressed by the integration of technology in everyday life, Burns commented on China’s advancements in artificial intelligence and new energy sources. “Chinese are advancing rapidly in things like AI, and that will be needed for the new energy sources, so I congratulate China,” he said.
Burns’s experience highlights the dynamic blend of ancient culture and modern innovation in China, showcasing a nation that honors its history while accelerating toward the future.
