For many international students studying in the Chinese mainland, celebrating the Chinese New Year is a unique and heartwarming experience. This year, Wambui Kiarie, a student from Kenya at Peking University, chose to immerse herself in the festive spirit alongside her university friends.
Instead of returning home, Wambui stayed on campus, where she joined friends in the school cafeteria to prepare traditional dishes. She learned to make dumplings and Laba garlic, staples of the Chinese New Year feast.
“Making dumplings was so much fun and reminded me of cooking with my family back in Kenya,” Wambui shared with a smile. “Even though I was far from home, celebrating with friends made me feel connected and part of a community.”
The festivities brought back cherished memories for Wambui, bridging the gap between her Kenyan roots and her life in China. She expressed hope that everyone could enjoy the holidays surrounded by loved ones.
“I encourage everyone to embrace new experiences and cherish the time spent with those around you,” she said. “The world feels a little smaller when we come together to celebrate.”
