The Spring Festival, one of China’s most cherished traditional holidays, holds deep cultural and historical significance. It’s a time not only for family reunions but also for building bridges between Chinese and foreign cultures.

Ericka Koo, a student from Costa Rica studying in China, recently shared her experiences of the Spring Festival. She expressed her admiration for the festival’s rich traditions and, in particular, her newfound love for festive dishes like dumplings and tangyuan (sweet rice dumplings). For Ericka, these foods symbolize more than just taste; they embody warmth, joy, and the essence of the celebrations.

“Eating dumplings and tangyuan with my friends here has been incredible,” Ericka said. “It makes me feel at home, even though I’m far away.”

Ericka also drew parallels between the Spring Festival and celebrations in Costa Rica. She highlighted that, much like in China, Costa Rican festivals emphasize gathering with loved ones to cherish special moments. “The common thread is family and togetherness,” she noted. “No matter where you are, celebrating with those you care about brings the same warmth.”

Her reflections showcase how traditional festivals can foster understanding and connection across different cultures, resonating with young people around the world.
