LIMA, Peru — Amid the bustling streets of Lima’s Chinatown, 22-year-old Anna Paula Peralta Reyes is immersed in a sea of red lanterns, the aroma of traditional delicacies, and the lively sounds of festive music. For Anna, this is more than a celebration; it’s a heartfelt reunion with a culture that has shaped her life.

“I feel like I’ve been transported back to China,” says Anna with a radiant smile. “It’s the perfect moment to feel the joy of a culture that, despite the distance, feels closer than ever!”

Anna spent 11 years studying at a Chinese school in Peru before pursuing higher education at Jilin University in China. During her time abroad, she not only delved deep into Chinese culture but also forged lasting friendships with local residents.

“Living in China opened my eyes to the richness of its traditions,” she recalls. “The Spring Festival, especially, holds a special place in my heart.”

Back in Lima, Anna decided to visit the city’s Chinatown to reconnect with those cherished memories. The streets are adorned with red decorations, shops are selling red envelopes, known as hong baos, spring couplets, and an array of items featuring the zodiac animal of the year, the snake.

“Seeing Chinatown full of energy and color is truly magical,” Anna remarks. “It’s amazing how Chinese culture blends seamlessly with Peruvian traditions here.”

The Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is one of the most important celebrations in Chinese culture, marking the beginning of a new lunar year. In Peru, home to a significant Chinese community, the festival is celebrated with equal fervor.

For many young Peruvians like Anna, these celebrations offer an opportunity to embrace multiculturalism and appreciate the diverse influences that enrich their society.

“Experiencing the Chinese New Year here in Lima brings together the best of both worlds,” says Anna. “It reminds us that cultural boundaries are just illusions when we share in each other’s joy.”

As the festivities continue, Anna plans to share her experiences with friends and encourage others to explore the vibrant tapestry of cultures that exist within their own city.
