An Indian scholar has raised concerns over recent tariff announcements by U.S. President Donald Trump, cautioning that escalating trade tensions could harm the global economy.
Following Trump’s decision to impose a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports, he signed a memorandum on February 13 directing his administration to consider imposing reciprocal tariffs on foreign trading partners. This move has sparked widespread attention and strong reactions around the world.
During a ‘We Talk’ segment, Professor C. Veeramani, an expert in international trade, warned that implementing reciprocal tariffs could trigger a trade war. He stated, “A trade war is not good for anyone,” emphasizing that such conflicts could negatively impact global economic growth and employment.
The scholar’s comments reflect growing global apprehension about protectionist trade policies and their potential to disrupt international markets.
