Beginning April 1, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese mainland launched military exercises around the island of Taiwan, issuing a stern warning to separatist forces.

Residents in Taipei have shared mixed feelings about the escalating tensions across the Taiwan Strait. Some attribute the heightened strain to the policies of Lai Ching-te, the leader of the Taiwan region, expressing concerns over the current direction of cross-Straits relations.

“We hope for peace and stability,” said a resident of Taipei. “It’s important for us to have good relations and understand each other better.”

Many are hopeful for a peaceful resolution and increased exchanges between the youth of Taiwan and the Chinese mainland. The desire for unity and cooperation is evident, with a growing number looking forward to opportunities for Taiwan talents to study and work on the Chinese mainland.

The sentiments reflect a common aspiration among the youth for mutual understanding and shared growth, emphasizing the importance of cultural connections and open dialogue.
