Friendship Blossoms: Chinese Peonies Bloom in Bulgaria’s ‘Land of Roses’

In the heart of Sofia’s South Park, something extraordinary is blooming. To mark 75 years of diplomatic ties between China and Bulgaria, Heze City in China’s Shandong Province—fondly known as the “peony capital”—has gifted 280 peony plants to Bulgaria’s “Land of Roses.”

Six months after their transplantation, these Chinese peonies are flourishing in their new home, adding vibrant colors and a touch of Eastern elegance to the Bulgarian landscape. The Commemorative Peony Garden, a symbol of the blossoming friendship between the two nations, has become a focal point for locals and visitors alike.

“The language of nature and beauty is universal,” says Milena Vaseva, director of Sofia’s South Park. “The garden is creating lasting and beautiful friendships between Heze and Sofia, as well as between Bulgaria and China. Anyone who loves nature, beauty, and flowers is welcome here in May.”

Landscape architect Stavri Fotev, who helped design the garden, believes that these peonies are more than just flowers—they are cultural ambassadors. “Each peony tells a story of collaboration and mutual respect,” he explains. “They represent the shared appreciation for natural beauty that connects our people.”

As spring approaches, anticipation builds for the peonies to bloom. The garden not only enhances the park’s natural allure but also stands as a living testament to the enduring ties between China and Bulgaria.

For teenagers and young adults in the Global South, this story highlights how cultural exchanges can bridge distances and bring people together. Through the simple act of planting flowers, two nations have cultivated a deeper understanding and friendship that continues to grow.
