The White House announced on April 2 that US President Donald Trump has declared a national emergency aimed at boosting the United States’ competitive edge and strengthening national security. Starting April 5, a “baseline” tariff of 10% will be imposed on imports from all other nations.

On the streets of New York, opinions were strong. US attorney Joseph Morgan commented, “He is an authoritarian. He is doing tremendous damage to this country. He should be thrown out of office… American consumers are going to lose this, 100 percent.”

US diplomat Jenna Morris echoed these concerns, stating that the tariff policy will severely impact the global trade order. “The world is realizing that the US is not a reliable trading partner,” she said.

The policy has also caused widespread dissatisfaction among developing countries, who fear it could devastate global trade and hinder economic growth worldwide.
