The peony, a symbol of national prosperity and happiness, is blossoming into a bridge of cultural connection between China and Japan. On Tuesday, the 2025 World Peony Conference and the 34th Heze International Peony Culture and Tourism Festival officially opened in Heze City, east China’s Shandong Province, known as China’s “Peony Capital.”

More than just an iconic flower of China, the peony has become a global ambassador that transcends borders. Its delicate petals and rich symbolism have left an indelible mark on the world of horticulture and art.

Peonies in Japanese Art

In Japan, the peony represents wealth and prosperity, and its elegant motifs are prominently featured in traditional textile arts. Japanese Kyo-Yuzen dyeing artist Mutsumi Kimura admires peony patterns in clothing design.

“Peonies are called the king of flowers; they are gorgeous and symbolize good luck. They are often used in formal kimonos,” she explained, noting that in Japan, peonies signify nobility and elegance.

A Blossom of Friendship

The shared appreciation for the peony highlights the deep cultural ties between Chinese and Japanese people. By celebrating this floral symbol, artists from both nations explore the beauty that unites them.

As peonies bloom across borders, they not only adorn landscapes but also foster friendship and understanding. The festival in Heze City serves as a testament to how a simple flower can connect diverse cultures and promote international recognition.

Through the universal language of art and nature, the peony continues to be a beacon of harmony and shared heritage between China and Japan.
